Kathy Porter Obituary

The Obituary
“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1(NIV)
Kathy L. Durant Porter, daughter of the late Jasper and Mary Loadholt Durant, was born on December 30, 1957, in Allendale County, South Carolina. She departed this life on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolin.
Kathy attended school in the Hampton County School District and continued her education at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Library Science. Kathy worked briefly in the field of Library Science, and in later years, she was a cashier in various food markets and stores in the Hampton County area.
While working in Sumter County, Kathy met and married Johnny Porter. Their marriage came to an end due to his sudden illness and death. After Johnny’s death, Kathy returned to Brunson, SC to live with her mother, Mary L. Durant. Kathy then met the late George Gilyard.
Kathy practically grew up in the “Church” and, from a child to adulthood, looked forward to attending Sunday services, revivals in the area, and Bible study. She was baptized and was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Brunson, South Carolina. In recent years, Kathy moved her membership to Huspah Missionary Baptist Church in Hampton, South Carolina.
Kathy also enjoyed word search, seek, and find puzzles. If you wanted to find Kathy, you could call her friend Tina and locate Kathy at Tina’s home. Tina provided an endearing friendship to Kathy. Kathy also enjoyed visiting the senior center in Hampton.
Kathy’s greatest joy and love of her life was her son, Demetrius Gilyard (Meech). She supported him all through school with band practice and traveling with the band to parades and programs. She also supported him through his careers of law enforcement, the fire department, and EMS. That support also continued as Demetrius played organ at various churches in the surrounding counties.
She leaves to celebrate and cherish her memory: her son, Demetrius Gilyard; a brother, Jasper of Durant, NJ; a sister, Jeanette Little of NJ; her aunt, Rebecca M. Loadholt of Elkins Park, PA; cousins, Janice D. Loadholt of Elkins Park, PA, Hammie (Alfreda) Loadholt of Clifton Heights, PA, R.
