Obituary
On Monday, October 11, 2021, Edward Middelton, affectionately known as Eddie by family and friends, entered into heavenly rest at home surrounded by loved ones. After a rapid and fierce battle, he succumbed to widespread metastatic cancer. Eddie was born July 4, 1952 in Hampton, South Carolina to Louise Smith Middelton and George Middelton.
As a child of a US Army father, Eddie traveled the world. He returned to Hampton, SC to attend Wade Hampton High School. Eddie was among the first to integrate Wade Hampton High School. While at Wade Hampton High, Eddie was an extremely gifted athlete, excelling in track, baseball, football, and basketball. His athletic prowess earned him a full athletic scholarship to Wake Forest University. Instead of attending university, Eddie proudly chose to enlist in the United States Air Force to serve in Vietnam.
Eddie had a stellar career in the United States Air Force as a Law Enforcement Specialist. In 1983, he received a Bronze Star for Valor for his actions in Operation Urgent Fury on the island of Grenada. Eddie retired after 20 years in the Air Force as a Master Sergeant. He proudly served his country, but his greatest joy was being dad to Alisha and Edward.
Eddie continued his government service as a Veterans Affairs (VA) Police. He was Assistant Chief of Police at Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). He continued his VA career as Chief of Police at Hampton VAMC, where he met, Sheila Darlene Hardy. They married in 2010. Eddie continued his VA career at the Durham VA Health Care System, where he retired after 20 years of service.
Eddie loved music, and was a self-taught drummer. While at the Hampton VAMC, he was one of the founding members of the band, The Hampton Players. This band played for the Hampton VA Community Living Center Nursing Home residents, to provide musical recreation for our senior Veterans. When Eddie moved to Durham, he became a founding member of the Still Kicking Band. This band is a source of lively entertainment for our 55 and better community, and was Eddie’s passion.
Eddie enjoyed traveling with his wife, but especially loved to travel to Hampton, SC to visit his dear Mother, Louise.
