Mother Josephine M. Capers was born in Hampton County, South Carolina to the late Hampie Capers on September 24, 1916. On February 24, 2021, Mother Capers surrendered to the summons of her Creator after a long illness at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, South Carolina, surrounded by her loving family.Josephine was educated in the public schools of Hampton County, South Carolina. She was employed in food services in the Hampton County School System for many years. She also reared and cared for many children in the community.
At a young age, Mother Josephine accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Hampton, where she served faithfully as a member of the Senior Choir, the Missionary Board and Mother of the Church until her health declined. She was also a lifelong member of the Order of Eastern Star, Mount Olive Lodge #359 of Hampton.
On April 16, 1940, Mother Josephine became the proud mother of one son, Willie James Capers, who preceded her in death on February 21, 2018. Along with her mother and son, two brothers, Joseph (Pauline) Capers and Isaac (Maybell) Capers, also preceded her in death.
Mother Capers never knew a stranger. Everyone who met her fell in love with her sweet spirit. She enjoyed meeting new people and making sure no one or animal went hungry, especially stray cats. She loved cooking for her family and that included her pets. She became affectionately known as Mitt by her grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish fond memories, her devoted daughter-in-law and caregiver, Laverne Capers; grandchildren, the Honorable Katina (Carmen) Washington of Winnsboro, SC and William James Capers, II of Hampton, SC; nieces, Ronnie M. Alls and Jannie H. Moore of Hampton, SC, Carrie Smith of NY; nephew, John (Betty) Capers of Okeechobee, FL; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
