O’Banner Haynes Mitchell was born February 1, 1939, in Fairfax, South Carolina. She was the second of five children born to the late Cartell & Clara Coath Haynes. In addition to her parents, O’Banner was reared by her late maternal uncles and aunts, the late Henry “Jack”(Sadie) Williams and Edward Sr.( Rosa) Lee Pryor. In her youth, O’ Banner attended Cherry Grove Christian Church, Brunson, South Carolina. In 1958, she graduated Valedictorian of the former North District, Training School, Varnville, South Carolina. After graduating in 1958, she relocated to Brooklyn, New York. Wedded bliss was to follow that next year in 1959 as she united in holy matrimony to Mr. Roosevelt Mitchell. To this union, three children were born: Dale, Kelvin, and Tanya.
Upon O’Banner’s arrival to New York, she became a member of First Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. She served on the Usher Board for several years. In 1981, O’Banner joined Order of the Eastern Star and became a dedicated member of Fidelity Chapter #54, (PHOES) Brooklyn, New York, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1985. O’Banner furthered her education and training at Brooklyn and St. Joseph’s College leading her to becoming an Executive Administrator for Marubeni Japanese Corporation in New York City. O’Banner retired after 35 years of outstanding service.
O’Banner entered peaceful rest on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers: Quillie Coath, Sr., MacDuffie Haynes, Sr., Asbury Williams, one sister, Frezell Haynes and one granddaughter, Miss Uniqueca S. Mitchell.
O’Banner leaves to cherish her memories husband of 62 years, Roosevelt Mitchell, three children: Dale Mitchell & daughter-in-law Krystal Mitchell, Nampa, Idaho; Kelvin Mitchell, Sr., Queens, New York; and Tanya M. Voyd & son-in-law Dennis C. Voyd, Sr; Hempstead, NY. One grandson: Kelvin Mitchell Jr., Bronx, NY. Three great grandchildren: Kelya & Kelvin Mitchell, III, Yonkers, NY and Daniella Mitchell, Hempstead, NY. One sister, Evelena Lee, Brunson, SC. One Godson: James Harris, Jr., St. Louis, MO. A host of nephews, nieces, Brother-in- law: Otis Mitchell, Mt. Vernon, NY;Sisters-in-laws: Prudence Williams; Allendale, SC, Doris Brooks; Columbia, SC; and Janice (Sigo) Solomons, Estill, SC, Whilamenia Coath, Fairfax,SC, three special loved ones: Nancy Aguilera, Bronx, NY, Kenya Pastuers, Yonkers, NY, and Janice Solomons, Estill, SC and loving family and friends
