Squire, the first of three sons of the Late Willie and Celia Haygood Smart, was born November 11, 1931, in Newington, Georgia.
He along with his brothers, Harry Lee and Willie James “Jack” Smart, were educated in Screven County schools. He was employed for over 30 years at Savannah Machine Company in Savannah, GA. Early in his life he married the late Willie Mae Gant and to that union 3 children, Celia, Squire and Willie C., were born. Later in life, he met and married Minnie Chess and relocated to Allendale, SC and to that union, one daughter, Stephanie, was born; however, they raised Antoinette Graham and Henrietta Williams as their daughters. Several years after moving to Allendale County, Squire and Minnie operated Smart’s Texaco Service Station in Allendale. Squire enjoyed being a mechanic and gardening. During his lifetime he developed friendships too numerous to name.
In the Fall of his life, Squire joined Revelation Ministries under the leadership of Pastor Virgin Johnson, Jr. He had a passion for cooking and was appointed to the church’s Culinary Ministry.
On June 2_, 2021, God, in his infinite wisdom, wiped away all tears from Squire’s eyes, and there was no more death, neither sorrow nor crying. Neither shall he be in any more pain. For the former things are passed away and God allowed Squire to transition from his long suffering and his illnesses. He was ready to be offered, and the time of his departure was at hand. He finished his course. The Lord our gracious God, summoned Minnie’s husband, our dad, grandpa, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law and friend to his eternal life. Squire was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Smart and Celia Mae Hagood Smart Morris and his brothers Willie “Jack” and Harry Lee Smart.
We are confident that our beloved, Squire, would rather be absent from his body and to be present with the Lord; the memories he left will be cherished by, his loving family: his wife, Minnie Chess Smart of the home, and four daughters, Celia Mae Thomas, Oliver, GA, Stephanie Smart Gittings and her husband, Joel of the home, Antoinette Graham and her husband Bernard, Columbia, SC and Henrietta Williams, Barnwell, SC; sons, Willie Smart, Oliver, Ga and Squire Smart, Jr. and his wife, Joyce Sylvania, GA; grandchildren he helped rear, Audra Thomas of Guyton, GA, De’Andrea Youmans of Aiken, SC, Malcolm Graham and Jamelia Graham of Columbia, SC , Alecia Williams of Aiken,SC , Jada Gittings, whom he fondly called, “Gator”, and Joel Gittings, III,of the home; sisters in law, Annie Ruth Smart, Newington, GA, and Corrie Mae Crowder and her husband, Fred of Bronx, NY.
